Over 70 residents attended a fraud awareness event on February 10 at Hammersmith Town Hall organised by the H&F Neighbourhood Watch Association.

Association Chair David Millar said: “It seems that every time you open a newspaper there is a story about innocent people being scammed by criminals, whether it be on the telephone or online.

“The Association wanted to ensure that our members have the information they need to help prevent themselves becoming victims of these con merchants. So we invited officers from the Met Police Proactive Fraud Prevention Unit and a speaker from Cifas, the UK’s leading anti fraud agency, to come and speak to our residents about these frauds.”

Jim Egley and Rob Osborne from the MPS demonstrated how fraudsters try to trick people into giving their banking details out over the phone in an entertaining role play. Information about their work with Operation Sterling can be found on the link below.

Local resident Patricia Hicks said: “This is one of the most useful events I’ve been to in years. Very useful literature which my husband is currently ploughing through; a first for him!”
